Pete Rock has claimed that he doesn’t want to be included on ‘any hip hop producer list’ that would pit him against others in the game.
Despite being one of the pioneers of jazz rap and being mentioned in conversation alongside DJ Premier, Q-Tip, J Dilla, Madlib and more, the NYC-producer does not want his likeness attached to any list attempting to rank hip-hop’s greatest producers of all time.
In an Instagram post on Wednesday (February 7), the Chocolate Boy Wonder spelled out, “I need you guys help. Will you help keep my name off any hip hop producer list you may see? [laughing emoji] naw serious If dont see my name thats fine. [2 laughing emojis] thats the goal lol. Will you help me?”
The notorious beatmaker for the duo Pete Rock & CL Smooth elaborated in the comments section: “any hip hop producer list you see wether im mentioned or not wether there is history to prove it or not does not mean im short of anything. Those silly list on social media people rant & rave over THEY CAN HAVE IT I DONT WANT IT.”
He continued: “im telling yall right now idgaf no more lol. Dont put me on no list. If you know you know and thats it.”

After a career of critical success for his remixes and production for The Roots, , A Tribe Called Quest,Heavy D & The Boyz and more, Pete Rock is set to deliver a joint project with another Hip Hop legend.
Common recently announced that he is “enthused and inspired” to be working on a full-length project with the legendary East Coast beatmaker.
The Chicago native first announced the project last September, revealing that the effort is inspired by “Brand Nubian, A Tribe Called Quest, or De La Soul, because they just got their music on streaming, it’s been inspiring to hear.”
While appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers to promote his new book And Then We Rise on January 22, he had an update.
“I’m working on a new album with the legendary Pete Rock as the producer and man I’m so enthused and inspired about this project,” Common gushed. “And Seth, I’m already plugging and saying, can I come back and perform some of this music?”
Pete Rock is known to be one of the most prolific and masterful producers in all of hip-hop, going on to synthesize renowned beats such as “Juicy,” “Jazz (We’ve Got It) Buggin’ Out,” and “The World Is Yours.”
Although Rock does not want to be included in any “all-time lists,” that does not discount his influence and importance as one of the greatest artists within the genre.
