The fifth annual Silent Film Festival will feature two Minnesota musicians performing live as the movies play on the Little Theatre Auditorium stage: F. W. Murnau’s “Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans” with live music from Andrea Limoges, and two silent shorts with music by Nicholas Davis.
“Sunrise” is a dreamy story of marriage, life, temptation and heartbreak. It won an Oscar for “best unique and artistic picture” and uses visual effects to communicate the characters emotions.
Limoges has lived in Willmar for nine years and plays piano and guitar, as well as other instruments. Limoges currently works in hospice, and gets the opportunity to peek at individuals’ and families’ “life playlists” and frequently asks clients “Do you have a preference for the sunrise or sunset?”
Davis will create the soundtrack for two short films: “Fluttering Hearts” (1927) and “The Life and Death of 9413: a Hollywood Extra” (1928). Davis is an electronic musician hailing from Minneapolis. With an emphasis on improvised composition, they weave sound loops and hardware synthesizers to create moody, cinematic atmospheres. Davis’ music is characterized by sweeping soundscapes that transport audiences to otherworldly realms.
National Silent Movie Day was created out of the belief that “silent film is a vital, beautiful, and often overlooked part of film history.” More information on the variety of events across the United States is available at
