Zaq Schuster remembers attending a music festival in New York City that was held in only two venues. Does a festival that small even count as a festival, Schuster wondered?
Then Schuster thought of the Waking Windows festival that for more than a decade has unfolded over multiple days in multiple venues. That event has been a big hit for the small city of Winooski; could something similar happen across the Winooski River in the bigger city of Burlington?
Schuster and other Burlington music fans will find out this weekend, when the initial Groundhog Fest begins Friday, Jan. 31 and concludes Sunday, Feb. 2 (Groundhog Day, of course). Schuster’s electronic act Roost.World will perform as will many other bands of the moment in Burlington, including Robber Robber, Acqua Mossa, Lily Seabird, Mikahely, Greaseface and Sabouyouma.
Out-of-town DJs and musicians will also take part in Groundhog Fest. New York artist James K plays a live set on the final day of the event Feb. 2.
“I definitely tried to get my favorites in there,” said Schuster, who uses they/them pronouns. Posters for the festival list the acts alphabetically, not with large print for headliners and smaller print for other acts like many festivals do. Schuster said they dislike the “hierarchy font” other festivals employ.

Schuster spoke with the Burlington Free Press over coffee at Muddy Waters, the long-standing coffeeshop that will be among the venues hosting Groundhog Fest (with a pop-up kitchen courtesy of Taco Gordo). Others include Radio Bean, Contois Auditorium in Burlington City Hall, J skis and T Ruggs Tavern.
Schuster said everyone they talked to in town about staging a new music festival liked the idea. That includes the city of Burlington, which is not only hosting concerts at City Hall but also a Feb. 1 rail jam in City Hall Park.
“I was just getting green lights the whole way,” Schuster said.
A winter festival makes perfect sense to Schuster. They said they were planning a New Year’s Eve event and felt frustrated over that day being the end-all and be-all of winter parties. Groundhog Day, and now Groundhog Fest, comes smack-dab in the middle of what for many feels like the longest, most-desolate season of the year.
“I like to say it’s never enough for that stuff,” Schuster said of big musical parties.
Schuster said interest has been strong for Groundhog Fest. They’re selling 300 weekend passes for the event, and Schuster doesn’t expect to turn much if any profit.
The festival is presented by a nonprofit that Schuster and some friends oversee called the Burlington Electronic Department. Not to be confused with the Burlington Electric Department, the Burlington Electronic Department has for years presented phantasmagoric musical happenings at Radio Bean as well as raves at locations throughout Burlington.
“We’re a bit of a utility service ourselves,” Schuster said, one aiming to supply needed fun to the public in the dead of winter.
