Sixty-four-year-old British baritone Simon Keenlyside was born into a musical family and started on his path early, performing with a resident boys’ choir from the age of eight. By his 30s, he was becoming known on opera stages in Great Britian and Europe and eventually the U.S., where he made his debut with New York’s Metropolitan Opera in 1996.

He’s also known for performing vocal works by a wide range of composers including Benjamin Britten, Henry Purcell and Gustav Mahler. It’s the latter whose work he’ll be singing with the Cleveland Orchestra, opening an all-Mahler concert with selected songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn and Lieder und Gesänge aus der Jugendzeit.

The orchestra will then play Mahler’s Symphony No. 7, which premiered in 1908 in Prague. Music director Franz Welser-Möst will conduct the program. The preview lecture will be given by Oberlin Conservatory Associate Professor of Musicology James O’Leary.
