We’re coming to you from the North Shore Chamber Music Festival for a masterclass with violinist Grigory Kalinovsky and AFSF 2022 Opportunity Award recipient Marina Alba López.
Ahead of this event, The Violin Channel got to ask violinist Grigory Kalinovsky his best tips for giving a masterclass!
“To me, masterclasses are about breaking into that routine and offering a fresh look at the student’s playing, he said. “Very often I’ll comment on something in a masterclass, and I can see in the student’s eyes that look of ‘Oh yes, I’ve heard that before and maybe it is actually important.’ Sometimes I’ll observe a masterclass where my student is playing for someone else, and I myself start seeing their playing with a fresh eye…”
A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Professor Kalinovksy currently serves as faculty of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and also teaches at the Heifetz International Music and IU Summer String Academy. His students are former prizewinners at major competitions including the Spohr International Violin Competition, Tibor Varga Junior Competition, Menuhin Young Artists Competition in England, Andrea Postacchini Young Violinists Competition in Italy, and Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition in Chicago.
