With just over a week left until the official start of fall, we’re getting in the mood early with some spooky-fun activities this week on Cape.
Why not enjoy the weather and watch some rubber duckies race at the Rubber Duck Regatta at the West Dennis Yacht Club? Or enjoy some fun in the sun in Truro during Truro Treasures, a weekend-long festival full of antiquing, treasure hunting and even grape stomping.
If you’re looking for some musical fun, check out the Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival or if you want to be a part of the chorus, try your hand at an audition for the Cranberry Shores Chorus or show up for rehearsal at Rock Voices in Hyannis.
Watch the rubber duckies race at the Rubber Duck Regatta in West Dennis
The little yellow ducks are making their way from the tub to open water during this year’s Rubber Duck Regatta at the West Dennis Yacht Club, hosted by the Dennis Conservation Land Trust.
The event will take place Sept. 17 and 500 ducks will race down Weir Creek, hoping to win one of three cash prizes — $500 for first, $150 for second, $100 for third — for their local business sponsors. For those looking to participate, entries can be bought through dennisconservation.org for $10 or three for $25 until Sept. 15.
If you’re planning on attending, make sure to stop by the exhibitor’s table to vote on the best-decorated duck before the race begins. Food will also be available at the race and activities for all ages will also be taking place.
The Rubber Duck Regatta starts at 11 a.m. and goes until 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17 at the West Dennis Yacht Club in West Dennis. Attendance is free.
Try Hawaiian food while helping people with ‘Meals for Maui’ fundraiser in Falmouth
Community groups on the Upper and Mid-Cape are hosting a takeout Hawaiian dinner, “Meals for Maui,” to raise money for people devastated by wildfires on the island.
Laura Higgins, chef and owner of the Buffalo Jump Restaurant, is preparing huli huli chicken thighs, rice and luau vegetables. A vegetarian option of huli huli jackfruit is also available. Higgins’ mother, baker Annie Konner, is making dessert.
Dinners, which can be ordered now by calling 508-549-5269 and picked up between 4:30 and 7 p.m. Sept. 20 at Waquoit Congregational Church, are $15 for adults, $11 for children under age 9. Dessert is $4.
All proceeds will go to Maui Food Bank and the Maui Humane Society. People also may donate directly to Meals for Maui, c/o Waquoit Congregational Church, 15 Parsons Lane, Waquoit, MA 02536.
Meals for Maui is co-sponsored by community organizations including Falmouth Jewish Congregation, St. Barnabas’ Episcopal Church, No Place for Hate-Falmouth, North Falmouth Congregational Church, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Falmouth, Mashpee Congregational Church, John Wesley Methodist Church and South Congregational Church Centerville.
Search for treasure or stomp grapes at Truro Treasures
Truro Treasures will be hosting a slew of events all weekend long. Whether you’re into antiquing, treasure hunting, running or partying, Truro Treasures has an event for you.
Beginning on Friday, Sept. 15, the weekend kicks off with a game of pickleball at the Pamet Harbor Yacht & Tennis Club from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. followed by an opening night presentation at the Highland House Museum from 4 to 5:30 p.m. There is a cocktail party at Edgewood Farm from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Sept. 16, the Pamet 5K fun run at Pamet Harbor starts at 8:15 a.m. Participants can register online at trurotreasures.org/. The treasure hunt also takes place on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at Highland House Museum. Register for the hunt, with each car costing $10. A community breakfast follows from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Truro Christian North Union Church at 27 Shore Road in North Truro.
The first day of the artists and flea market at the Truro Central School is also on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m., just in time for you to catch the rest of the “Rock the Block” party and cornhole tournament. On Sunday, Sept. 17, events kick off with the second day of the artists fair and flea market at 10 a.m. An antiques and classic car show will take place from 11 a.m. at the Truro Community Center until 2 p.m., but try to leave early if you want to catch the grape stomp at Truro Vineyards as it starts at 2 p.m., ends at 6 p.m., closing out the weekend fun.
Enjoy the arts at the Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival
The Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival has been a tradition since 1970. This year, more than 175 vendors and 15 community booths will fill the Community Center fields as the festival celebrates its 53rd year. The festival will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16 and Sunday, Sept. 17.
The CranJam music festival goes from noon to dark on Saturday followed by a fireworks display, and from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Be sure to bring your own deck chair or blanket to sit on and hit the wooden dance floor. Food trucks will also be on site for the music festival, and wine and Devil’s Purse Brewing Co. beer will be sold, too.
Parking and attendance are free for both events. The festival will take place at 100 Oak St. in Harwich, behind the Harwich Community Center.
Celebrate Oktoberfest with Cape Cod Beer in Hyannis
Get out your lederhosen and head to the biergarten as Cape Cod Beer is kicking off Oktoberfest celebrations on Saturday, Sept. 16 from 12 to 8 p.m.
While German-style beers flow from the taps and German-inspired barbeque from JP’s Twisted BBQ fills stomachs, the biergarten will transform into a German celebration. Contests, such as a costume contest and Bavarian pretzel-eating contest, games and live music will be going on all day.

Clean up the beach during Coast Sweep on Martha’s Vineyard
If you enjoy the benefits of the beautiful beaches, you may want to help keep them beautiful. The Center for Coastal Studies will be hosting its 15th COASTSWEEP on the Outer Cape throughout September with its first cleanup taking place on Sept. 16 at Long Point Wildlife Refuge.
Volunteers must register online at constantcontact.com for the cleanup and meet at MacMillian Pier in Provincetown before heading down to the Vineyard for the cleanup. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The week following, the CCS will be hosting its 8th annual Outer Cape Cleanup from Friday, Sept. 22 to Monday, Sept. 25 covering beaches from Coast Guard Beach in Eastham to Race Point in Provincetown. Cleanup days take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and volunteers can register online for one or multiple days.
Try your hand at being in the chorus in Hyannis
The Cranberry Shores Chorus Women’s A Cappella Chorus is looking for new female singers to join their group: They will be hosting a workshop at Fellowship Hall on Sept. 19 for any interested parties to come and learn more about them. The “Love to Sing?” event starts at 6:30 and ends at 8:30 p.m., giving prospective joiners the chance to get to know some of the chorus members, learn about their “Harmonize for the Holidays” program, watch a performance from the chorus and participate in a mini rehearsal.

And if you’re looking to jump right into the action, look no further than Rock Voices. An audition-free choir, Rock Voices is for adults who are rock enthusiasts. The organization is nationwide but also has a chapter here, in Hyannis. Their first rehearsal of the season is Sept. 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. and rehearsals are every Monday following. The first three weeks of rehearsals are “open house” events, meaning if you’re testing out the waters you can attend for free, but if you want to join for the season, tuition costs $275. Financial aid is available for those in need.
The first Rock Voices rehearsal for this year will take place at the First Baptist Church of Hyannis at 486 Main St. in Hyannis on Sept. 18 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Learn how to disagree without being disrespectful in Truro
Disagreements are a part of our everyday conversations. They can be tough to navigate as disagreements can often be confused with attacks on opinions, leading to exchanges of harsh words and arguments that didn’t need to happen. In an attempt to teach people how to mitigate that, Dan Winslow of the New England Legal Foundation will be hosting a talk called “Civility in Politics: How to Disagree Without Being Disrespectful” at the Truro Public Library on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 p.m.
The Truro Public Library is located at 7 Standish Way in North Truro and the event is free to attend.
Author Tracy Kidder and health care for homeless leader Dr. Jim O’Connell talk in Woods Hole
Tracy Kidder and Dr. Jim O’Connell, president of the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, will discuss Kidder’s book, “Rough Sleepers,” which chronicles O’Connell’s urgent mission to bring healing to homeless people in Boston.
The discussion is from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 22 in the Clapp Auditorium in the Lillie Building at 7 MBL St. in Woods Hole. The event will also feature Cape Cod Housing Assistance CEO Alisa Magnotta and other guests who will talk about the “protracted housing crisis on Cape Cod and the changing face of the region’s homeless population,” organizers wrote.
Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at haconcapecod.org/roughsleepers. Proceeds will benefit Housing Assistance, which is co-sponsoring the event with the Jewel Cobb Action Committee. Eight Cousins Books will sell copies of “Rough Sleepers” at the event and attendees can have the book signed by the author.

Check out the new ‘Art in the Bank’ at the Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod in East Harwich
In partnership with the Guild of Harwich Artists, the Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod will exhibit the work of Carroll and Peter Sivco until Sept. 30.
Paintings will be on display during the East Harwich branch’s bank hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday. The bank is located at 1470 Orleans Road in East Harwich.
