Taipei, Sept. 12 (CNA) Urban contemporary musician The Crane on Tuesday notched up the most nominations from the jury of this year’s Golden Indie Music Awards (GIMAs), while late radio show host Daniel Shen (沈鴻元) was posthumously given the Special Contribution Award.

The GIMAs’ jury on Tuesday unveiled this year’s nominees in Taipei.

The Crane, whose real name is Lin Tai-yu (林泰羽), got the jury’s nods with his album “TALENT,” which earned him the nominations of “Album of the Year,” “Best Singer-Songwriter,” “Best Newcomer,” “Best R&B Album,” and “Best R&B Song.”

Shen, widely recognized as one of Taiwan’s premier promoters of jazz, was beloved by jazz aficionados and created a dedicated following with his jazz radio show on the e-Classical station, the jury said.

In addition to introducing the music genre to local audiences, Shen had also organized jazz-themed events that served as the incubator for many up-and-coming local jazz musicians, the jury said.

Shen died in April of bile duct cancer. He was 50.

The jury received a total of 3,634 submissions this year from contenders in Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Macau, the Philippines, Singapore, India, and Thailand.

Jurors selected 102 works that will be vying for an award in 21 categories.

In its 14th year, the GIMAs, overseen by the Ministry of Culture, recognize musicians who write their original music and encourage musical talent to showcase their creativity, according to the event organizers.

The awards are known for their three features: prioritizing Taiwanese music, prioritizing originality, and being inclusive of all languages, the organizers said.

Since its launch in 2010, the GIMAs have nurtured songwriters across all genres and is establishing itself as an important international music award, the organizers said.

The award ceremony will be held on Oct. 28 at Taipei Music Center.
