This year’s festival is steampunk themed, drawing inspiration from Romania’s steampunk museum.

The Windwood Music Festival is returning to Airdrie’s public spaces for a third year of classical music acts and artistic connection from July 28 to August 11.

According to Windwood Music Festival co-founder Tong Wang, professional international artists come together for a two week residency to prepare creative projects themed around celebrating community, arts, and sustainability.

Resident artists will exude festival spirit with pop-up performances at local businesses and parks all over Airdrie starting on July 28, according to Wang.

A ticketed performance at Brella Vida on August 3 officially begins the festival before an opening night performance called “Creep, Cryptograms, and Kapustin” at Bert Church Theatre on August 9.

The action continues on August 10 at Chinook Winds Regional Park with a fun-filled day featuring resident artists, local artists, plays, craft tables, and various other art projects to accompany the performances from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

This year’s festival is steampunk themed, drawing inspiration from Romania’s steampunk museum. Wang said audience interaction last year helped the team decide on going all in with classical-industrial aesthetics this year.

“[Steampunk] intersects with a lot of the awesome music that we’re going to play, and it’s really exciting, really punky,” said Wang. She added that visitors are encouraged to wear their best steampunk outfits during the festival.

The festival wraps up with an afternoon salon at Brella Vida where visitors can connect over wine, food, and drinks from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Wang said the salon celebrates the conclusion of another festival and brings together the most passionate minds from Airdrie’s art and music scene.

Founded on the same passion, Wang is excited to see the third instalment of the Windwood Music Festival come to life in her hometown.

“[Airdrie] is such a beautiful community with a lot of craving for the arts and music, and I just felt like we saw a need here for people to come together over live music and especially to see the value of the highest calibre of classical music,” said Wang.
