Sony Pictures Animation has revealed a new fantasy-adventure film in development, directed by Matt Braly, the creator and executive producer of the Disney Channel hit series Amphibia, and co-written and produced by Rebecca Sugar, the creator and executive producer of the beloved Cartoon Network show Steven Universe.

The film, which is currently untitled, will follow the story of a young boy who embarks on an emotional journey to a fantastical world of Thai spirits, where he hopes to have his illness cured. The film is inspired by Braly’s own heritage and experiences as a Thai-American, as well as his passion for fantasy and animation.

Braly and Sugar are both acclaimed animators, writers, directors, and producers, who have worked together on Steven Universe and Gravity Falls, where Braly won an Annie Award for his directing work. Sugar is also known for her groundbreaking work on Steven Universe, which featured diverse characters, musical numbers, and themes of empathy and identity. The film will also feature original songs by Sugar and other artists.

The film is part of Sony Pictures Animation’s International division, which was launched in 2019 with the goal of producing diverse and original stories from different cultures and regions. The division’s first film, Wish Dragon, was released in 2021. The film will join Sony Pictures Animation’s slate of upcoming projects, which include Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third and final installment of the groundbreaking Spider-Man animated trilogy; K-Pop: Demon Hunters, a musical adventure film set in the world of Korean pop music; Fixed, an adult comedy from legendary animator Genndy Tartakovsky; and Ghostbusters: Ecto Force, a Netflix-exclusive series based on the iconic Ghostbusters franchise.

The film is expected to be released in 2025, and will be distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. No cast or crew details have been revealed yet.
