Following a memorable Outside Lands performance, DJ Diesel — the alter ego for basketball great Shaquille O’Neal — is headed back to San Francisco for another music festival. The NBA star-turned-disc jockey is slated to headline the first night of Breakaway Music Festival, a traveling electronic music festival that is scheduled to stop in the Bay Area on Oct. 13 and 14.

O’Neal was a last-minute addition to the festival. DJ Snake, the French producer and DJ most famous for his 2013 dance anthem with Lil Jon “Turn Down for What,” was scheduled to headline but had to cancel “due to unforeseen circumstances,” according to an X post by the festival. DJ Diesel’s booking was announced Tuesday, just 10 days before his scheduled performance.

O’Neal was last seen in San Francisco in August, when he showed up late for his Outside Lands set with an excuse that any Bay Area fan would understand: He’d gotten held up hanging out with Steph Curry and Draymond Green. In his stead, Ryan Laehy and Christian Franco — two relative unknowns — were plucked from the crowd to perform for 15 minutes before O’Neal arrived. O’Neal also played a night show at 1015 Folsom during Outside Lands weekend.

O’Neal’s sets aren’t groundbreaking. He relies heavily on samples from famous crowd-pleasing songs. “Seven Nation Army,” “Hustlin,” “Whatcha Say,” “Barbie Girl” and “We Are the Champions” were all featured during his 45-minute Outside Lands set. But his presence — both his enormous physical stature and his life-of-the-party attitude — make him a delightfully entertaining performer.

Breakaway’s Bay Area iteration is slated to take place Oct. 13 and 14 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in downtown San Francisco. French DJ Madeon is co-headlining with DJ Diesel on the festival’s first night. Alan Walker and NGHTMRE are headlining the second night. Tickets, which start at $99 for single-day passes, are still available.

The Warriors have a preseason game against O’Neal’s former team, the Lakers, in Los Angeles on the night of his Breakaway performance, so he’ll have no excuse for being late this time.

Milk Carton Kids Preview the First Annual Los Angeles Folk Festival

The Los Angeles music scene has long had “folk music,” in its many permutations and offshoots, as a key part of the famous sounds the city has been most often associated with. But a festival with that as part of the moniker and definition? Not so often, though some locals with long memories will remember a Troubadours of Folk Festival at UCLA in 1993 that included everyone from Joni Mitchell to the Folksmen. Since then, it’s been mostly crickets, in […]
