Saint Lucia: Creole Heritage Month comes alive with music, food, live performances

Soufriere, Saint Lucia: The town of Soufriere has immersed itself in the observance of Creole Heritage Month in Saint Lucia. Its packed calendar continued over the weekend of October 7th and 8th.

The communities of Fond Gens Libre and Bouton served as the epicenters, showcasing the rich tapestry of Kweyol culture.

On Saturday, October 7th, Fond Gens Libre took center stage with a music and food festival. The event was a remarkable fusion of culture and culinary delights, featuring captivating performances by local musicians and dancers who brought the Kweyol culture to life.

Attendees were treated to an array of traditional dishes that tantalized their taste buds, making it an unforgettable celebration. On Sunday, October 8th, the picturesque community of Bouton held a storytelling event that left patrons amused and enthralled.

Avot Servis band had residents and patrons dancing the night away. The event provided a platform for showcasing the art of storytelling, a cherished tradition in Creole culture.

Upcoming Creole Heritage Month Activities

The Creole Heritage Month celebrations in Soufriere are far from over. The calendar is filled with exciting events that promise to deepen immersion into kweyol culture. Upcoming events for this weekend include:

  • Bamboo Bursting, Pig Slaughter, and Kweyol Dance at Zenon (Saturday 14th October 2023 from 5 pm): On the 14th, Zenon will come alive with the excitement of bamboo bursting, traditional pig slaughter, and a Kweyol dance.
    Cocoa Festival at the Old Trafford Complex (Sunday 15th October 2023 from 10am): In collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, a Cocoa Festival will be hosted at the Old Trafford Complex, inviting attendees to explore the world of cocoa. Don’t miss live performances from DYP, Future Lights and many more.
  • Fete La Marguerite (Tuesday 17th October 2023): Schools within Soufriere will put on a vibrant celebration of Fete La Marguerite. The activities will commence with a church service at 9 am and then the celebration will move to the Old Trafford Complex.

The Creole Heritage Month consisted of the cultural richness and celebration. It invited the people to join the festivities, highlighting the beauty of Creole culture.

Creole Heritage activities will be held every weekend until the grand finale, a celebration like no other of Laplas Kweyol at the Soufriere Mini Stadium from 5 am on the 29th of October 2023.
