The 2024 Sudbury Music Festival, formerly the Kiwanis Music Festival of Sudbury, will be held from April 4 to April 14.

Participants will once again have the opportunity to gather in person and experience each other’s performances live, carrying on a 77-year tradition.

Most Sudbury Music Festival participants will perform and receive feedback face-to-face with their adjudicator. School choirs, bands and other large ensembles outside of Greater Sudbury will have the option to submit video recordings for adjudication or perform in person.

Music teachers and enthusiasts passionate about the festival and the opportunities it provides young musicians will certainly have reason to celebrate.

“Festival coordinator Louis Simão and the organizing board have been working for the past several months to ensure Sudbury and area music students have a chance to perform and compete as they have over the past 77 years,” festival board chair Ralph McIntosh said in a release. “After two challenging yet successful online festivals, we are all looking forward to the return of more live, in-person events.”

All relevant information, including the 2024 syllabus, is now available on the festival’s website at www.sudburymusicfestival.ca

Additional details, such as the venue and exact date of the final concert, will be announced in the coming months.

“Our aim is, and always has been, to create as meaningful an experience for the participants as possible,” McIntosh said. “The return to a predominantly in-person format (after the restrictions imposed by COVID-19) will be a welcome change for the performers, parents and other supporters.”

Registrations will be open until Jan. 31. The festival said this is a “firm deadline,” so register well in advance.

New for 2024: a $25 surcharge will be applied per entry for school bands and choirs opting for adjudications within their schools. This additional fee assists in covering the travel expenses incurred by the Sudbury Music Festival while providing each school with a cheaper option than arranging bus transportation.

In addition, those who intend to participate in the Sudbury Music Festival to qualify for the provincials are advised to contact the Ontario Musical Festivals Association (OMFA) before registering for the Sudbury Festival to verify whether their selected pieces meet OMFA’s eligibility requirements. For more, go to omfa.ca/contact-us and omfa.ca/syllabus.

The 78th edition of the festival will also require the support of community volunteers to assist with the supervision of the various festival activities. Music lovers and music education supporters willing to volunteer should contact Simão at info.sudburymusicfestival@gmail.com or 416-532-8209.
