Addressing the crowd during his final concert, Daddy Yankee, whose real name is Ramón Rodríguez, openly shared his decision to shift his focus towards his Christian faith. In Spanish, he conveyed, “I am not ashamed to tell the whole world that Jesus lives in me and that I will live for him.” The artist highlighted the void he tried to fill in his life over the years and expressed his determination to use his music, social networks, and other platforms for the service of God.
The retirement announcement followed Daddy Yankee’s farewell tour, spanning from July to December 2022, and aligned with the release of his final album, “Legendaddy,” which debuted in 2022. The tour included four concerts at the Coliseum, culminating in a symbolic conclusion to his musical journey.
Daddy Yankee’s impact on the music industry, especially in Latin America, has been profound. Growing up in the Villa Kennedy area of San Juan, he initially pursued a baseball career but transitioned to music after a leg injury ended his athletic aspirations. His debut album, “No Mercy,” released in 1995, contributed to the development of reggaeton, blending influences of US hip-hop and Caribbean dancehall.
Daddy Yankee’s breakthrough came with the 2004 hit “Gasolina,” a reggaeton anthem that achieved international acclaim. In 2017, he played a pivotal role in the worldwide success of “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi, and his subsequent hit, “Con Calma,” further solidified his position as a trailblazer in the music industry.
