On January 15, Milk Jar Cookies will permanently close its Encino and Mid-Wilshire locations. An Instagram post cited challenges that ring similar to other restaurant closings throughout 2023: the long effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the six-month writers/actors strike, and rising operating costs.

Owner Courtney Cowan had a career in television as a post-producer for shows like Six Feet Under and The Good Wife before quitting and launching Milk Jar Cookies in 2013. Milk Jar Cookies found quick success as a local bakery with two locations, and also shipped its goods nationwide. This is the second popular LA bakery to cease operations this week, with Sweet Lady Jane closing all six locations on December 31. Milk Jar’s full Instagram post is here.
