DUNDALK, Md. (WJLA) — A music festival in Dundalk is raising thousands of dollars for the Baltimore port workers impacted by the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The Support the Port fundraiser is expected to last late into Friday night, raising more than $8,000 before 8 p.m., according to organizers.
“I think everyone woke up Tuesday not knowing how to feel, not knowing what to do with themselves, and eventually we remembered that we’re an amazing band community,” explained Molly Korman, who organized the music festival with her husband.
“You never expect to have all of your neighbors having a crisis at the same time but that’s what it really is,” Korman said. “There’s no one that hasn’t been affected or driven over or loves that bridge.”
For Sandy Wienecke, the bridge collapse hits close to home. She said her father, an iron worker helped build it.
“It was kind of like losing part of my dad all over again,” she said. “I went from shocked to sadness to being kind of mad that it’s gone. I know we’re going to build bigger and better, but it’s never going to be the same.”
At least eight people were working on the bridge Tuesday when a cargo ship crashed into it, causing it to collapse. Two of the workers made it to safety and the bodies of two workers were recovered Wednesday. Four people are presumed dead, officials said.
