‘MJ the Musical’ Starring Atlanta’s Roman Banks Takes Center Stage at Fox Theatre

“MJ The Musical” made its highly anticipated debut on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. In the lead role and paying tribute to the legendary Michael Jackson, Atlanta native Roman Banks delivers a captivating performance as the King of Pop and takes audiences on a journey through his life, music, and unparalleled influence on the entertainment world. The homage to the icon results in an inspiring performance from Atlanta native Roman Banks who left the audience spellbound and wanting more. 

The production launches right into an immersive experience for audience members who often find themselves singing along while reminiscing about one of the greatest entertainers of all time. From the moment the curtains rose, the stage iss transformed into a vivid tapestry of Michael Jackson’s life story, expertly weaving together pivotal moments from his childhood, the Jackson 5 era, and his meteoric rise to superstardom. The show’s creators skillfully balanced spectacle with intimacy, transporting the audience through time with meticulously crafted sets, dazzling costumes, and innovative choreography that mirrored Jackson’s iconic moves.

Roman Banks, a local boy who made good, admits he initially turned down the role to star in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, in which he played Howie in season 2.  when he received the offer of a lifetime.

“I had auditioned for the role of Middle Michael, which is the out of Jackson 5 into ‘Off the Wall’ era of Michael Jackson,” he says. “That would have been my dream come true. I would’ve been able to originate a role and that would’ve been so exciting.” 

Critics are already saluting Banks for the energy he brings to the stage and his remarkable discipline in studying every dance step and nuance of the King of Pop. Director Christopher Wheeldon says, “I am extremely excited that the incredibly talented Roman Banks will soon be dazzling audiences across America as Michael Jackson in MJ. Roman is a stunning performer, and we are lucky to have him leading the company on our first national tour.”
