KENOSHA — “Matilda the Musical Jr.” — based on the 1988 children’s novel of the same name by Roald Dahl — continues this weekend at St. Joseph Catholic Academy.

The stage show, based on the 1988 children’s novel of the same name by Roald Dahl, tells the story of Matilda, a precocious 5-year-old girl with a special power. At home, her parents think the energetic, intelligent girl is a nuisance, and at school she clashes with her school’s monstrous headmistress, Miss Trunchbull.

The musical opened in London in 2011 and on Broadway in 2013. The story was also the basis for a 1996 film (“Matilda”).

This is the “junior” version of the Broadway show, adapted for school productions by Music Theatre International.

“This is such a great show,” said Director Julie Ann Seidl. “It tells a great story, and the characters are amazing, as is the music.”

The “junior” version of the Broadway musical is shorter and “is easier for young children to enjoy,” Seidl said.

The cast, too, features some younger actors.

“I use this as a ‘training show’ for our theater program,” Seidl said.

“The production looks good,” she said. “The cast is amazing, the crew is fabulous, and all the technical stuff is great, too.”
