People from all over are descending on Louisville for two popular music festivals this month. Bourbon & Beyond has more than 65 performing acts, including headliners like The Killers and Bruno Mars. The world’s largest music and bourbon experience kicks off back-to-back weekends of festivals in the derby city. One of the biggest rock festivals, Louder than Life, runs from Sept. 21-24. Record attendance is expected at both events at the Highland Festival Grounds with a combined 200,000+ people.The strong economic impact extends to hotel occupancy, with each weekend at nearly 90%.It’s anticipated that both events will rake in $26 million for the city, according to Louisville Tourism.“Well over 60% of the folks that come in, come from over 100 miles away,” said Zack Davis of Louisville Tourism. “There’s this major overnight attendance and when you stay overnight, you go to the festival, but then, of course, you are using transportation, eating at our restaurants, visiting attractions, and checking out distilleries. We love that folks are staying and experiencing the entire city.”Leslie Feurer is one visitor from Missouri who, each year, enjoys Louisville beyond the festival grounds.“Louisville is a really nice place to visit,” she said. “Our favorite restaurant is Doc Crow’s, we have to stop by every time and we like to go downtown and check out what’s new.”Bourbon & Beyond also embraces Kentucky’s rich culture with bourbon tastings, specialty bars, and culinary programs.“It’s pretty awesome because a lot of people are from out of town; we have people from Wisconsin and Illinois that came in just for this, so they’re getting the Kentucky experience,” said Tia Rutter, who is working the event.While the festival is a celebration of great whiskey and great music, it also showcases community.“You’d think you’d stereotype coming to these different types of events, like this is just going to be country and Louder than Life is going to be metal heads, but it’s not,” Rutter said. “It’s all different genres, all different walks of life, all different types of people and that’s what I love the most.”Bourbon and Beyond runs until Sunday.
