YT is a London rapper whose music is nostalgic for late 2000s to early 2010s Cali’s jerk era. His Kesha-sampling joy ride “100,000” isn’t far off from Pink Dollaz’s 2010 regional anthem “I’m Tasty,” and quite a few tracks on his new mixtape #STILLSWAGGIN could have easily been songs on Young Sam’s Jerkin’ Can’t Die. The tape’s intro “The One (Just Got My Degree)” is a highlight, and like other artists who have been updating jerk (see: Xaviersobased and Yhapojj), producer Treyko weaves together the style’s signature stuttering drums with hazy rhythms. Meanwhile, YT keeps the spirit of jerk intact with low stakes, feel-good bars that aren’t concerned with much other than bragging about his Ed Hardy jeans. It includes a must-watch music video, filmed at his Oxford graduation.
With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
Check out previous Ones, and listen to new rap from YT and more on our Spotify playlist.
