A MUCH-LOVED music festival could be set to make a sensational return after nearly a decade.
The Wickerman Festival delighted thousands of music fans over 14 years.
It was renowned for its eclectic array of rock, indie, folk, dance, punk and reggae acts, with previous lineups including Gary Numan, The Proclaimers, Buzzcocks, The Charlatans, and Goldie Lookin’ Chain.
It was also iconic for its huge 30ft tall Wickerman effigy and its name was inspired by the cult 1973 movie The Wickerman which was largely filmed in the surrounding area.
The event, held near Dundrennan, Dumfries and Galloway, first took place in 2001 and ran until 2015.
The festival’s demise coincided with the tragic death of its director Jamie Gilroy, who took his own life.
But there is hope that the cult festival, nicknamed ‘Scotland’s alternative music festival’, could return.
A cryptic post on its Facebook page earlier read: “Much has been said of the strumpets of yore. Of wenches and bawdyhouse queens by the score. But I sing of a baggage that we all adore. The landlord’s daughter. July 24.”
Fans of the festival flocked to call for the festival’s return.
One wrote: “I am still gutted about it finishing. Everything about it was perfect. Choice of music, family friendly, layout of the site. If you ever decide to do it again we will be there.
Another commented: “My first ever festival in 2008. Would love to see it back.”
A third said: “My fave festival ever, bar none. I miss it massively.”
The festival, which hosted around 18,000 revellers each year, took a hiatus in 2016 after the passing of Mr Gilroy.
But after failing to find a promoter, in November 2016 the festival ended indefinitely.
