The Deep Roots Music Festival, which ran Sept. 22-24 in Wolfville, returned with a fine blast of music after three years of interruption.

Peter Mowat, who chaired the festival for 13 years, spoke Sept. 24 about the joy this year evoked after three festivals stymied by COVID-19 and post-tropical storm Fiona.

Incoming society chairperson Gerry Davis called this year’s event “very much a success. We had a good turnout and a great lineup.”

He gave credit to longtime organizers like Mowat, Dave Carmichael, who handles programming, and Lisa Hammett Vaughan for smooth operations and expressed gratitude for a raft of new volunteers this year.

In fact, more than 140 volunteers prepared the 17th edition of the Annapolis Valley event. Festival-goers gathered during great weather for amazing music in venues from a tent in Clock Park to a full Festival Theatre.

CBC’s Jeff Douglas hosted the Friday night concert with the David Myles Trio, Kaia Kater, David Celia & Zuffalo, along with Freya Milliken and her band. Myles, a popular troubadour, expressed the joy of all the performers in being back on stage.

Saturday night’s concert was sold-out largely due to headliner Jim Cuddy. Joining him were Jenn Grant, Scott Cook with Pamela Mae, and Valmy. Darrin Harvey hosted two festival concerts.

Festivities began with a couple of small gatherings at community venues: a benefit/singalong for the Valley Community Learning Association in Kentville, led by Acadia music graduate Rebecca Fairless, as well as a taping of Zakary Miller’s The Friendly Heckler podcast at the Ross Creek Annex in Canning.

Davis noted attendance numbers were “looking pretty good toward covering our expenses.”
