The 2000 classic by the Puerto Rican band has been covered by several Mexican artists, including Lucero and Edith Marquez

Gabito Ballesteros is pulling the nostalgic heartstrings with the release of his newest track. On Thursday night, the música Mexicana star released the single “A Puro Dolor,” a requinto-backed re-envisioning of the 2000 Son By Four hit.

The video flashes between a young woman in red surrounded by candles before Ballesteros speaks on a payphone and sings passionate lyrics about missing a lost lover: “I’m dying to see you/Agonizing slowly and strongly.”

“A Puro Dolor” marks the singer’s first solo single since April’s “Fendi.” This year, he released collaborative LP SS23 with Remmy Valenzuela, recorded “Lady Gaga” with Peso Pluma, dropped “La Nena” with Becky G, and joined Eslabón Armado on “La Fresa.” His last release arrived in October when he joined Natanael Cano on “Lou Lou.”

“This one hurts :/ </3,” the singer wrote on TikTok about “A Puro Dolor.”

Ballesteros is signed to Cano’s label Los CT and spoke to Billboard over the summer about finding success on social media, and using it to build a strong fanbase of young listeners.

“Nowadays, social media can open doors for you, and that’s what happened to me,” he said. “But this was just a hobby for me. I couldn’t dedicate myself fully to music, because my parents wanted me to finish school first.”

As for Son By Four, the group is now made up of only Carlos Javier Montes and Jorge Montes. The duo has focused their career on releasing gospel music. “A Puro Dolor” was featured on the group’s self-titled LP Son by Four in 2000.

The song has been covered by several artists including Lucero in 2011, Edith Márquez in 2007, and banda singer Uriel Barrera in 2020.
