From otherworldly jazz and electronica to driving punky guitars, brass ensembles, lilting folk, laidback rock and even traditional Irish tunes, the annual shindig in Baldersby Park near Thirsk offered a veritable smorgasbord of musical offerings.

Mums, dads and grandparents bopped along in bucket hats to big-name acts including mystical three-piece The Comet Is Coming, Gaz Coombes (of Supergrass fame), Public Service Broadcasting – making their third appearance – Sunday headliners the Delgados and Welsh singer Gwenno.

Other acts performing earlier on the bill also packed a mighty punch including Dream Wife and Panic Shack – both female-fronted bands drawing big crowds and louder cheers with their seriously entertaining punky sets – Doncaster-based singer Skinny Pelembe, rap group the Nine8 collective and seven-piece ensemble Plastic Mermaids, who filled the In The Dock tent with their soaring harmonies and unique, creative sound.

Away from the music there was plenty to keep festival goers entertained – particularly the younger ones. Children got hands-on making bottle rockets, straw models, AI album covers and even IKEA furniture in a flat pack challenge.

The sports arena – featuring its own skateboard ramp – provided plenty of free space for visitors young, and old, to burn off energy, while tree climbing and kayaking sessions proved ever popular all weekend.

There was also wild swimming, yoga, outdoor crafts and intimate fireside acoustic sets with some of the weekend’s acts in The Wilderwild.

And not forgetting the theatre, film and comedy in The Big Top – with Malaysian/British comic Phil Wang drawing a standing-room-only crowd on Saturday night. He openly acknowledged having to alter some of his material for the many young faces in the crowd but still gained plenty of laughs.

The weather may not have been as mixed as first expected, with sunshine thankfully replacing much of the predicted rain. But the entertainment, experiences and activities on offer at this year’s Deer Shed provided enough variety for all ages and tastes.
