Deep Tropics’ Market Caters To Festival-Inspired Sustainable Fashion

Since its launch in 2017, the Deep Tropics Festival has become one of the most sustainable festivals in America, among the over 500 music festivals in the United States. Partnering with the environmentally conscious Virgin Hotels Nashville, Deep Tropics offers an eco-friendly musical experience for attendees while showcasing festival fashion that wore the same sentiment – conscious living.

The collaboration goes beyond the festival for Deep Tropics, hosting opening event parties with sustainable practices like recycling and composting activations, and tin drinking cup rentals that minimize waste at the venue. Even the “Meru” stage was working on an AI system that only ran power during performaces.

With its sister non-profit Deep Culture, other environmental initiatives have taken place, achieving a 96% waste diversion rate in 2022. Partner Virgin Hotels Nashville is also committed to sustainability with the goal of net zero emissions by 2030, aligning with the [17] Sustainable Development Goals.

Deep Tropics also organized a vintage market featuring the best vintage curators in Nashville, Finders Thrifters, and Melissa Lockwood’s IQTest-NYC label. Lockwood is an innovative upcycle designer and design science researcher, making deadstock and recycled fashion styles that maintain true tailoring. She would also host an upcycling workshop in the Deep Culture area of the festival grounds, teaching participants to create looks like she did for a demonstration runway this past Cannes Film Festival.

Her regenerative designs have garnered global attention and have utilized factory waste fabrics specifically. Other vendors at Deep Tropics catered to more of the festival style and the expression afforded to festival-goers. Labels like IEDM.com displayed its vibrant neon aesthetic, and Daytrippers, whose merchandise speaks to those looking for a euphoric experience. The vendor Black Myth spoke to the more spiritual festival attendees with its hats and shirts, sending the message to “Plant Something Valuable.”

One brand synonymous with festivals would grant the stage to other brands creating conscious-inspired fashion. Hailing from Savannah, Georgia, Mamie Ruth has been creating looks for the free spirits that roam around the country in search of live music on the largest scale. With fedora hats that come in custom styles and expressive looks for any style you choose, Mamie Ruth would host a runway show featuring designs from brands like Cybelle Elena.

The DJs kept the music going all day and all night, and eyewear designers Coco and Breezy Dotson, who are also a DJing duo, held a set on the main stage, the Meru Amphitheater, in the Bicentennial Park in Nashville. An extension of their talent, fashion is a common thread among music lovers, wearing sheer fabrics, vibrant pastels, leotards, winged creations, and illuminating hats, styles that presumably provide the most freedom for dancing.

Deep Tropics Festival has partnered with the local sustainable fashion brand BrownLee, an eco-conscious brand prominently featured at the festival as a collaborator on exclusive merchandise launching this upcoming 2023 Fall/Winter season. This collaboration presents a unique focus on sustainable fashion, with a firsthand look at BrownLee’s eco-friendly collection, validating the Deep Tropics ethos.

BrownLee is a fusion of coasts, drawing inspiration from the founder’s family heritage – embracing Swedish craftsmanship and east coast monochromatic luxury. Their approach focuses on refined basics crafted from high-quality materials, blending superior fabrications with an unhurried design philosophy, all delivered in strategic fashion ‘kits’ that simplify the shopping experience and mitigate production and textile waste.

They emphasize sustainability by producing items in the USA through eco-friendly practices, using ethically sourced materials, and maintaining positive relationships with suppliers. BrownLee’s design process prioritizes functional luxury, considering wearability, versatility, and comfort. Their goal is to offer impeccable fashion essentials that customers will consistently choose and enjoy, making pieces you can feel confident in.
