Beijing Music Festival Unveils 2023 Lineup

The Beijing Music Festival has announced its 2023 season. Here is a rundown of the classical vocal performances.

It opens with an opening concert featuring soprano Zhang Liping. Yang Yang conducts the China Philharmonic & Beijing Chinese Orchestra.

Performance Date: Sept. 22, 2023

Yu Ji conducts the Chinese premiere of Haydn’s “Il Mondo della Luna” with a cast starring Yi Yang, Niru Liu, Vivian Yau, Mengshi Li, Andy Shen Liu, and Weiqin Xu. Liming Yi directs.

Performance Date: Sept. 23 & 24, 2023

Soprano Sophie Karthäuser stars in “Pastoral for the Planet. Yi Huang conducts a co-production between the Grand Théâtre de Proven, La Fura dels Baus, and Insula Orchestra.

Performance Date: Sept. 30, 2023

Jian Pan conducts “Echos of a Childhood Dream.” The concert features the Beijing Philharmonic Choir.

Performance Date: Oct. 2, 2023

Zhou Zhengzhong, Dong Fang, and Li Jingjing star in “AI Variation,” an opera by Hao Weiya and Wang Yuanfei. Yang Jingze directs and Zhang Jiemin conducts.

Performance Date: Oct. 2, 2023

Soprano Yang Chenxiuyi headlines “The Call of the Future.”

Performance Date: Oct. 5, 2023

Tenor Warren Mok and pianist Yu Chen perform art songs from around the world in “Voice of Romance.”

Performance Date: Oct. 6, 2023

Susan Bickley and Graeme Danby star in “Bluebeard’s Castle.” Stephen Higgins conducts the London Sinfonietta. Daisy Evans directs.

Performance Date: Oct. 7 & 8, 2023

Soprano Gabriella Noble and countertenor Andy Shen Liu star in “Childhood Memories” alongside the Mahler Foundation Festival Orchestra. John Warner conducts music by Zhenyan Li, Sasha Scott, and Gustav Mahler.

Performance Date: Oct. 10, 2023

Wang Yupeng and Wu Wei star in “Songs of the Earth, Music from China.” John Warner conducts the Mahler Foundation Festival Orchestra. The concert includes music by Mahler, Benjamin, Dvorak, and Wang Ying.

Performance Date: Oct. 13, 2023

Closing out the season is a performance featuring mezzo Han Yinpei. John Warner and Yukuang Jin conduct the Mahler Foundation Festival Orchestra, Novus-Classica Camerata, and the Beijing Music Festival Orchestra.

Performance Date: Oct. 15, 2023
