Freedom Festival organizers cite threat of severe storms Saturday

Balloon pilot Brian Bennett fills his balloon with hot air during the 2023 Cedar Rapids Balloon Glow at Jones Park in Cedar Rapids. Nearly a dozen balloon pilots from across the state came out for the event, but due to incoming inclement weather, attendees were unable to get up close to the balloons. CEDR RAPIDS — With the threat of strong to severe storms Saturday, the Freedom Festival’s popular Balloon Glow in Jones Park has been canceled and will not be rescheduled this year.

“Hot and humid conditions will continue Saturday, with heat indices of 95 to 100 degrees possible,” the National Weather Service’s Quad City Bureau warned. “A cold front will move through the area Saturday afternoon and evening, leading to increasing chances of strong to severe thunderstorms. The main threat will be damaging wind gusts, with large hail and isolated tornadoes as secondary threats. Heavy downpours are also possible with any thunderstorms that form.”

However, the show will go on for the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy, by moving its VOLTA Music Festival portion of Balloon Glow indoors to the Ideal Theater, 213 16th Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, beginning at noon. Details: easterniowaartsacademy.org/events.
