SHANDAKEN, N.Y. — Four bands will get together in a celebration at the Balkan Mountains Music Festival at Glenbrook Park with a free concert on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 3-7 p.m.
The bands from the Hudson Valley and New York City will play odd meters and unusual scales and harmonies at the park, located at 48 state Route 42, an announcement said.
Visitors will be able to experience a different culture, hear music on instruments rarely seen in the Hudson Valley and learn traditional dances, the announcement said.
The event opens with dance lessons at 3 p.m. Then, Eva Salina’s Community Choir takes the stage at 4 p.m., followed by Pontic Firebird at 4:30 p.m., Mac & Cheez Balkan Power Trio at 5:30 p.m. and Bourbon and Breastmilk’s acapella Georgia polyphonic songs and beyond at 6:30 p.m.
Balkan means a “chain of wooded mountains” in modern Turkish and has been the Turkish word for the Balkan Peninsula since Ottoman times, organizers said.
Countries in or near the Balkans include Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia and Turkey.
The event is sponsored by Ulster Savings Bank in conjunction with the Phoenicia Library.
