Why dance lags behind music, film — Bigflow

A dancer and actor, Promise Enweribe, aka Bigflow, is of the opinion that dance is not as prominent as other forms of entertainment in the country because of the dominance of music and film.

He noted that this was in addition to several factors that contribute to the lower popularity and profitability of dance in Nigeria.

He told Sunday Scoop, “Nigeria’s entertainment industry is dominated by music and films. These sectors receive more attention and investment, leaving less room for the growth of other forms of entertainment, such as dance.

“Also, dance often requires specialised spaces, equipment, and training facilities. The lack of proper infrastructure for dance education and performances can hinder its development.

Bigflow, who is also called Skonto in his comedy skits, stated that he had always wanted to become an actor. He said, “I have always loved watching movies and wanted to become an actor since I was a child. I remember vividly how I used to mimic the body movement and dialogues of actors after watching classic Nollywood movies. The likes of Olu Jacobs, the late Saint Obi, Regina Askia and others inspired me. Dance brought me to limelight first through shows such as  ‘Malta Guinness Street Dance’ and ‘Maltina Dance All’.”
